Bringing a thorough understanding of the goals and scope of each stage of editing, I help the overall publishing process to flow more smoothly. My clear communication allows authors, managing editors, and production editors to quickly understand and follow up on my markup.

Editor

As a substantive, structural, or developmental editor, I ensure that the author’s voice and message shine through from beginning to end. Providing supportive feedback from the audience’s perspective, I improve the flow and organization of the entire manuscript. I know when to be decisive and when to take a light hand—and how to accomplish both at the same time.

I have a keen eye for material that may require permissions and content that may leave the author vulnerable to uncharitable readers. My training also includes ethical research methods, including research with Indigenous communities. This additional training serves me well with fiction, nonfiction, autobiography, and memoir.

Copyeditor

As a copyeditor, I make clear interventions and concise suggestions to improve style, grammar, and syntax. While I’m an expert in Chicago style, I’m also comfortable with APA, MLA, and Bluebook. I regularly balance diverse house styles with unique author preferences. I’m known for my work with Indigenous authors, and bring flexibility and high standards to best support the author and their voice.

My edits will improve not only the text but the efficiency of the publishing process. I bring the same high standards and attention to detail to any additional materials that your project involves. These include markup tags, paragraph styles, captions, alt text, indexes, tables, and glossaries.

In addition, having provided accessibility services to students for a number of years, I am passionate about accessible publishing. When editing alt text, I rely on industry guidelines and standards such as those provided by W3C and DAISY to ensure that users of e-readers can enjoy a similar experience to all other readers.

I am an expert in Word and can also provide copyedits in Hypothes.is, WordPress, or the content management system of your choice.

Proofreader

As a proofreader, I tailor my interventions to each project. My experience typesetting books, newspapers, and magazines gives me insight into how my markup will affect the production process. With clear, precise, consistent, and organized markup in Adobe Acrobat, I ensure that formatting is clean and consistent to facilitate my client’s work.

By the time a proofread lands on my desk, I know the author has been through a lot. At this stage, publishers do not have the luxury of time, and thoroughness requires maximum clarity. Because of this, I ask the right questions over email to avoid repetitive, inconsistent, or overwhelming changes. I also provide helpful rationales when possible, which allows my client to make quick judgment calls. If something goes beyond the scope of a proofread, I bring it to my client’s attention before proceeding.

Consultant

I provide a range of services for a small number of nonprofit and NGO clients every year. Services may include:

• Writing, editing, and proofreading copy for internal and external communications (e.g., websites, newsletters, social media, reports, policy briefs, infographics, guides, bylaws, policies, procedures, forms, research materials)
• Fact-checking and research
• Converting citations from one style to another (Chicago, MLA, APA)
• Writing and editing grant applications and reports
• Drafting alt text and image captions
• Coordinating reprint permissions for previously published material
• Editing indexes

Fees

I provide quotes in the form of a project fee. Fees begin at $500 + applicable sales taxes and vary based on a number of factors, including:

• service, genre, and project length
• additional materials (captions, alt text, tables, indexes, etc.)
• required turnaround time
• rounds of feedback
• research, correspondence, and admin

Invoices are due within thirty days. Banoong Editing Services holds professional liability insurance.
